TEDEd Club Connect Week: Why Should We Explore?

This week we took part in a video (phone due to technical difficulties) conference call for our TEDEd Club Connect Week.  We talked with students in Washington, D.C., California, Canada, and Turkey and were able to share our ideas for our TEDEd Talks.  All of the students gave great feedback and even the students in Turkey spoke English!  One challenge the moderator gave us was to think about the question "Why should we explore?" and send our answers to their team for an opportunity to participate in a live video conference with underwater cave diver and seismologist, Jill Heinerth as she explores a WWII ship underwater at the end of February!
We hope we win with our well thought out responses!

Science Labs: Sum of Parts

This week students participated in several labs to show how the sum of parts are equal to the whole.  We learned how to use a triple beam balance and discussed the difference between mass and weight.

Fill the Bowls: Sixth Graders Growing Their Project from Last Year!

Leah, Jenna, and Tamia came in early this morning to start planning their community outreach for Atlanta Mission.  They discussed creating a small library with books for children to use and read at the shelter.  I can't wait to see how the continuation of their project grows!

Checking out the already donated boxes of books!

Google CS First Club Meeting #2: "Bust a Move"

Today we worked on our second lesson for music and sound.  We learned how loops work and how to add forever blocks and add in music too!  A lot of students gave "shout outs" to one another for helping add code to their project.
I think we all had a lot of fun today and are looking forward to our next meeting, which is musical art!

Google CS First Club: Music and Sound

Today was our first class club meeting for Google CS First for Music and Sound.  Students have their own passport and receive badges for each meeting and skill completed.  We are using the coding program, Scratch, to learn how to add music, dance moves, art, and sound effects to create a music video.  Students gave each other "shout outs" throughout the meeting and shared them at the end to keep in their passport.  We are excited to work through the eight lessons in the Music and Sound category and try out another section of the club next week!

A Student Celebrity in the Oval Office!

On December 4th, Jacob Haynes had the opportunity with his family to meet the President in the Oval Office at the White House!  Jacob asked the President for a selfie and his little brother got in on the photo too!  A White House photographer released this photo in his
Top 100 White House Photos for 2015.  Click on the link and scroll down to December 4th; his selfie made the top 100 for 2015!  This was an incredible opportunity and I know he will never forget it (even though he forgot to invite his teacher)! :)
