Adventures in Math PBL!

Our math class started brainstorming project ideas this morning and worked on finalizing a driving question.  Math is usually incorporated in our projects, but has never been exclusively its own project.  Groups are looking at trigonometry, math in their desired careers, angles used in sports to improve scores, the impact of Pi, and how statistics are used to improve fishing outcomes.
All of the ideas sound so interesting!

 Brainstorming math concepts

Deciding which careers use specific math skills

Learning about trig on a tutorial video they found!

Beginning Electricity and Magnetism Research

Groups were formed based on interest and driving question ideas presented to the class Monday.  Students are digging in to their research and finding out some interesting info!

Driving questions:
What is the most efficient way to use electricity and water to  make hydrogen/electricity and how can we create a prototype to demonstrate this?

How can we convert the dirt made from compost piles into eco-friendly energy, and with the energy how can we create products and, how can we make a compost pile that matches this description for White Oak?

How do EMP bombs disable electronic devices and how can we create a device that amplifies the EMP’s ability to disable electronics?

How does Six Flags use magnets to keep their roller coasters safe and how can we use this technology to keep other roller coasters in Georgia safe as well?

How can we prevent football head injuries with magnets in the helmets in by innovating the helmet?

How can we create a robot that can help kids express their feelings with just being able to touch a button by using electromagnetism and circuits?

Fill the Bowls: Day One of Fundraising!

On Friday, the group had a conference call with a high school mentor who is working on their website and marketing.  Saturday, the Fill the Bowls group set up a booth at WOWEE event at White Oak today to begin their fundraising for Atlanta Mission.  The entire group arrived before 8 am to set up and prepare!  The event was successful and they have plans to take part in two more events in May.
I am so proud of their success and their desire to help others!

Partnership with Lanier High students: Fill the Bowl Group

Great Depression projects are presented and done, but not for this group!  Their idea continues to grow as their fundraising idea for Atlanta Mission continues to develop.  Three wonderful high school students came over this afternoon to help the group brainstorm and plan for their fundraising event, website design, donation collection, and marketing.  I am looking forward to seeing their plans continue to mature!  What a great example of true collaboration!
